The Philadelphia rowhome is the staircase we see most in Pennsylvania: a straight flight, tight against one wall, usually with a turn at the top into the back bedroom. A standard lift fits the flight, but the seat has to fold properly or nobody else in the house gets up the stairs. Out through Bucks and Chester County it’s stone farmhouses with winders and treads that aren’t the same depth twice, which is curved-rail work whatever the brochure says.
Around Pittsburgh and the western hill towns the problem often isn’t inside at all. Houses sit above the street with a long run of concrete steps up from the sidewalk, and an outdoor lift on that climb changes more about somebody’s week than anything we could fit indoors. We look at the outside steps on every Pennsylvania visit, whether you asked about them or not.

Fitted in a morning
There’s nothing to manufacture, so the wait is short for these. Most straight installs are finished before lunch.
Fixed to the treads
The rail bolts to the edge of the stairs on visible brackets. Nothing goes into your wall, your plaster or the banister.
Folds flat
Seat, arms and footrest fold up against the rail, so everyone else in the house keeps the full width of the staircase.
Keeps working in an outage
It runs off batteries that charge at the top and bottom of the rail, so a power cut doesn’t strand anybody halfway.
A remote at each end
One at the top, one at the bottom. The lift can be called to whichever end it isn’t parked at, which matters in a house with two floors in use.
